According to new data from India’s Ministry of Tourism, the country issued a total of 43,833 e-tourist visas in May 2016. This marked a 180% jump compared to May 2015, representing the fact that India has significantly expanded the scheme in the last 12 months.
Travellers from the US accounted for the most e-tourist visas issued last month (18.5% of the total), followed by the UK (15.6%). China (8.2%), France (5.2%) and Germany (4.9%) completed the top five.
And the majority of the visas were issued to travellers arriving at Delhi Airport, followed by Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kochi airports.
For the first five months of the year, India has now issued a total of 434,927 e-tourist visas, up almost 300% compared to the same period in 2015. The facility is now available to the citizens of 150 countries.
